Wuzhong District is located in the southern part of Suzhou old city proper, and is next to Taihu
Lake. The whole district covers a land of 742km2, and a water area of 1,459 km2, which accounts
for three fifth the total size of Taihu Lake. It has 1 State-level Taihu Lake Tourist Resort, 1
provincial-level economic development zone, 1 state level Jiangsu Wuzhong Export Processing
Zone, 7 towns and 8 neighborhoods under its jurisdiction, with a registered permanent population
of 570,000.
In recent years, under the guidance of scientific development sense and centering round the
overall strategy of “building up a New Town of Wuzhong and beautifying the Taihu Lake hills and waters” as well as energetically publicizing the name-brand of “Suzhou’s hills and waters, and
Wuzhong’s human culture”, Wuzhong District has been making great efforts in its four major
projects of “strengthening its economic development zones, beautifying its Taihu Lake hills and
waters, prettifying its New Town of Wuzhong and making a good job in rural construction”, and
has been adhering to the overall coordinated and sustained development, with its industrialization,
urbanization and modernization having been enhanced from day to day.
In 2007, the whole district realized a regional gross output value of 39.109 billion yuan and a total
fiscal revenue of 8.15 billion yuan, with various economic and social indexes having exceeded the
target of a fairly comfortable life.
